I’d heard about this book over the years and wondered why it remained out of print. Then I read about Octavia Butler’s own objections to it. When I heard about it being reissued, I wondered if that was the right decision. But now I have to say I am happy it was done.
I’ve read just about all of her books and short stories. This is a welcome addition to her works. Can I see that she evolved as an author in other books? Yes, but that does not make this one lesser by any means.
And, as often happens with her stories, when it ended I was wanting more. She created a world that I wanted to spend more time in, though she might’ve felt it wasn’t up to her own standards. Unfortunately, we will never have more, but what she left us with is to be savored, debated, and enjoyed.
